Overheard My wife took a crash course in driving… She likes to put her foot down…. The only good thing about our car now … Thank God the upholstery’s brown. Overheard “Shall we try swapping positions tonight Dear” “OK! You stand by the ironing board and I’ll snore on the sofa” Jazz Event Next Thursday, my young jazz pianist friend Konrad Paszkudzki, who performed at my 70 th Birthday Bash, together with Alex Boneham from Sydney (on bass) and Andrew Fissenden – will be recording a live CD (Konrad's first) at the new Jazz Headquarters – Ellington's in It will be an exciting night if you enjoy a quality jazz trio. Try and make it. 'She doesn’t remember anything now…but I do’ A musing by my late mother Molly Estelle Mackie Sometimes, I hear them say, when they think I can't hear them .......... 'She doesn’t remember anything now’……… but I do. I remember when I was a little girl with ginger hair and freckles…….Mummy said my hair was auburn and only the finest of skins freckle…… She made sure I always wore a hat. Granny said it was a bonnet. It had a wide brim and ribbons, to tie in a bow under my chin. Nowadays, little girls wear hats with the brim turned right back and with a flower on the front. Their noses will get sunburnt. They said ‘Hello Granny’…….‘I wonder if my Granny is now me ?’ They tell the little girls with the turned back hats ….‘She doesn’t remember… but I do!’ ‘She’s lost her marbles’ A boy I knew saved a lot of coloured marbles. He had proper connies, connie agates and clay dabs he’d made with mud. His Mummy put them in the oven to dry them out. The boy showed me how to fire a connie agate with my thumb and we played Big Ring and Three Holes. The boy made the three holes with his heel and we’d fire our taw into the holes and try to scatter the marbles out. I heard them say those words …’ She doesn’t remember.... she’s lost her marbles’ But I haven’t…….. I gave the marbles back to the boy and he kept them in a marble bag with string on the top so they wouldn’t get lost. ‘A happy release’ When the days turned to winter we played games to keep us warm ….one of the games was called ‘ Releasings’….. when we’d hide until found and then chase each other around until we were caught. Here come the funny words again… something about….’ a happy release for me when I go’….. I wonder where I’m going? ‘In a world of her own’ I can hear people saying ‘she’s in a world of her own’, but I share my world with lots of people…………nice ladies, gentle and kind ladies. Once the man on the moon was in a world on his own but now he has visitors too. They never stop long……he must get lonely too!………. I only wish they knew. ‘I Do’ A long while ago in a Church we said ‘I Do’. The Minister asked us to repeat after him…..’ till death us do part’ and later we signed a Wedding Certificate. He said we were married and would be together. My mate has gone to heaven now, but I’m not alone, because we have part of each other in our children and our grandchildren. He would never say….…. ‘she doesn’t remember’………... He knows that I do. ‘Old Timer’ Nice ladies look after me and sometimes they call me ‘Old Timer’. It sounds better than that other word….alzheimer….I don’t want to remember that word…… but I do! ‘The Music’ Music is my friend. It reminds me of my dancing and singing years...tango's, foxtrots, pride of ‘Better in a Home’ I’m still at home…….it’s a lot better than being in ‘a home’. They keep saying… ‘She’d be better in a home.’ ……….…. But I am in a home ………..… my home! Return to Tech Talk |
